Background Information

Our parish lies between Tiverton and Honiton in Mid Devon. It is a large parish of nearly 10 square miles with approximately 3,000 inhabitants, most of whom live in the main village on the banks of the River Culm. In rural parts of the parish are the village of Ashill (population 200) and the smaller settlements of Bradfield, Stenhill, Smithincott, Craddock, Hayne and Bodmiscombe.

Our group was founded in 1983. Adrian Reed CMG (1921-2010) was our Chairman until 2008. He was involved in many other organisations particularly as Chairman of the Devon and Exeter Institution and maritime history.

Our President for many years was Dr C A Ralegh Radford OBE (1900-1999) famous for his archaeological and historical work on Dark Age Arthurian Sites in the South West of England and as Inspector for Ancient Monuments in Wales, both before and after the Second World War.

Our current Chair is Mike Dalby. Mike follows in the august footsteps of previous Chairs, Dorothy Lomas and John Bell, both of whom served the society for many years. We are fortunate that John remains on our committee.  He has a magnificent collection of photographs, publications and documents relating to the Uffculme area which are made available to the group at exhibitions, meetings and on conducted walks.  Members of the committee are currently involved in archiving this valuable historical resource.

Our current Secretary is Maria Weston who organises the annual programme, outings and social events as well as dealing with the administrative aspects of running our group. Alan George is our Treasurer who oversees our finances and keeps our accounts in order.

Dorothy Lomas and Wynne Ellis, our Treasurer until 2010, both did much to build up our membership and to improve our organisation and we are grateful to them both for their contribution to the society. As a group we are now looking to increase our already healthy membership of approximately forty individuals with the help of this website and our regular monthly articles in Spotlight - the Uffculme Parish magazine.

We have a lively and varied programme which runs from January to December. Our evening meetings on the first Wednesday of the month usually involve an invited speaker or a presentation by one of our knowledgeable members. In June we have our Summer Party and in July we always have an outing, e.g. to a historic property. December is our Christmas Party and January our AGM.  Please click on "This Year's Events" on the menu bar for full details our current programme.

Our monthly meetings are at 7:30pm in the Garden Room of Uffculme Village Hall (first Wednesday of the month) and anyone interested in local history is welcome to attend - we look forward to seeing you. Our annual membership subscription is just £10. Great value, considering you get so much - expert speakers, outings (additional costs may apply for coaches etc.) and parties! Should you require any further information or clarification, please contact our Secretary - details on Contact Page.
